Tequila Touring in Cancun

Drinking tequila is a whole different experience in Cancun – it's not just an activity reserved for partying, it's something of an educational experience. As Mexico's national drink, tequila is deeply rooted in the country's history starting in the 16th century. In fact, there is even a regulatory board that dictates the strict standards for the tequila production process, ensuring that the spirit is of the highest quality. Mexican law even states that tequila must have at least 51 percent agave. Tequila can only be made in certain parts of Mexico, & each distillery produces a product with a distinctly different flavor. Considering the fact that the blue agave plant makes more than 600 types of tequila, there is much to learn about this liquor. If you're eager to get an education about the variety of kinds of tequila on your next luxury vacation to Cancun, there's no better way to do so than on a tasting.

Here are two venues that offer tours & tastings to make you a tequila expert in no time:

La Destileria Restaurant Upon arriving at this restaurant, you'll see blue agave plants growing right outside the entrance. Inside, you'll find the fascinating machines & tools that are used to make tequila. If you're a visual learner, simply look around you at the murals on the walls – they tell the history of the spirit. One of these stunning paintings is of Mayahuel, the Goddess of Agave. The tour kicks off with a cocktail called the Tequilibrio. After sampling this delicious drink, you'll be guided through the restaurant until you eventually settle at a table with a breathtaking view of the lagoon. Here you'll be given a sample of three different tequilas: a blanco, a reposado & an añejo. You can catch a tour any time between 1 p.m. & 5 p.m., but it's best to go earlier in the day to ensure you get a spot.

Tequila Herradura Museo Sensorial Did you think all museums were boring? This one will prove you wrong. First, you'll learn about how the methods for tequila distillation have changed over the years. All of your senses will be engaged, as you'll smell the aroma of tequila aging in a barrel & then taste the finished product for yourself. You'll even watch short video presentations that offer you a deeper look at the process. The tour guide will also teach you about how to taste tequila properly.
